Sales of electric two-wheelers surpassed 1 lakh in May.
The reason for this was the reduction of the FAME 2 subsidy from June 1st.

We tell you that in April 2023, 66,724 electric two-wheelers were sold nationwide. According to this, 3,379 units of electric two-wheelers were sold in the country every day last month.

Why the huge increase?
Electric two-wheeler sales reportedly surged after the central government cut the FAME 2 subsidy. In fact, on May 22, the government announced it would cut the subsidies available for electric and hybrid vehicles by amending the FAME 2 subsidy. The subsidy for two-wheel electric vehicles has been reduced from 15,000 rupees/kWh to 10,000 rupees per kilowatt hour (kWh). In addition, the incentive cap for these vehicles has been reduced from 40 percent to 15 percent. Overall, the incentive was reduced by 37.5 percent. On the other hand, many companies, including Ola and Ather, had announced that they would increase the prices of their vehicles from June 1st. For this reason, between May 22 and May 31, people flocked to the showroom planning to buy an electric bicycle or scooter.

In addition to Ola Electric, companies such as TVS Motor, Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto and Okinawa also posted the best sales figures for the month of May.

Ola Electric sold 28,438 units in April 2023, beating its previous high of 21,991 units. At the same time, TVS Motor surpassed 20,000 units with sales of 20,253 iQube units. Ather Energy hit a new monthly high of 15,256 units. At the same time, Bajaj Auto saw a remarkable 168 percent increase in sales to 9,910 units, securing fourth place in sales for the first time.

These four OEMs were responsible for sales of 83,475 units out of a total of 1,04,755 electric vehicles sold in May, accounting for 80 percent of the market share.
