New Delhi. The central government has made changes to the FAME II program to promote electric vehicles. These changes will take effect on June 1st. The new changes have reduced the subsidy from 40 percent when buying an electric two-wheeler to 15 percent. The subsidy was reduced from 15,000 per kWh battery to 10,000.

That is, if the exhibition price of an electric scooter is 10,000 rupees, you used to get a subsidy of up to 40,000 rupees. This means that from Rs 60,000 you had to pay insurance and RTO fees. Now there is a discount of Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 40,000 on a Rs 100,000 vehicle. The car will cost you 75,000 rupees plus you will need to pay insurance and RTO fees.

However, if you want to buy an electric scooter cheaply, you can buy an electric scooter according to the earlier promotion until May 31. After that, if you buy an electric scooter, you may have to pay several thousand rupees for the vehicle. However, this regulation only applies to electric two-wheelers. The car subsidy remains in place.

In order to boost EV construction and manufacturing in India, in 2019 the government launched the FAME II program to accelerate EV adoption and manufacturing. A grant of 10,000 crores was announced as part of this scheme. The aim was to increase the demand for electric vehicles in the country.

According to the report by news18 English’s Bhaswati Guha Roy, reducing subsidies may impact sales of electric two-wheelers. Because this makes electric scooters more expensive. According to the report, April 2023 saw a 21 percent decline in overall EV sales compared to April 2022. Nevertheless, the demand for electric two-wheelers and electric three-wheelers remains. Sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers account for 90.48 percent of all electric vehicles.

UP, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat are leaders in India in terms of EV adoption. At the same time, according to the vehicle portal, around 39,000 electric vehicles have been sold in May so far.
