Maruti Suzuki has launched the 5-door variant of the Jimny in India and is already receiving many bookings. It will be a direct rival to the Mahindra Thar and some might wonder what else Maruti Suzuki has to offer against the Thar. Here are some facts about the Jimny that may help answer that question.
1. Rear door
The 5-door Jimny has separate doors for the rear seats, making it easier to get in and out, while the Thar is available in a 3-door version and access to the rear seats is through the passenger door only. Step through. That means you have to go through the passenger door to get to the rear seats, which can be a difficult task.
2. Boot Space
The Jimny has a longer wheelbase than the Mahindra Thar, which means it has more rear seat space and more trunk storage. With the rear seats folded down, the Jimny offers a total of 208 liters of storage space.
3. Rear window
The rear windows of the Mahindra SUV are broken. You cannot open or close the window. On the other hand, the Jimny has windows that open and close and are also electronically operated, which is great for the rear passengers.
4. Six airbags
The Jimny gets six airbags along with other safety features. But only two airbags are available in each variant of Thar. Thar enjoys a 4-star safety rating from GNCAP.
5. Automatic LED projector headlights with washers
The Jimny has a more impressive front fascia than the Thar, but the LED projector headlights with smaller DRLs are of much better use. The Thar only gets halogen headlights, which aren’t automatic.
6. Big screen
The new five-door Jimny gets Maruti’s new 9-inch infotainment touchscreen system, while the Mahindra Thar gets a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The Jimny’s screen looks a bit more premium than the Thar’s.
7. Automatic climate control
The Maruti Jimny gets an automatic AC system while the Mahindra Thar only gets a manual AC system. This difference is small but noticeable.
